Road Check Inspections
This year, the annual road check inspection will be conducted by both the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as well as the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. The inspection is slotted to take place from June 2nd until June 4th. Within those 3 days, around 10,000 motor vehicle officials will be conducting over 70,000 inspections at 1,500 different stations within North America.
After last year’s inspections, the rate of out-of-service vehicles sat at 18.7% with a driver out-of-service rate of 4.8%. These percentages can be lowered for this year if proper precautions take place.
Take a look at this vehicle checklist before road travel to ensure you are prepared for the road check inspections:
- Wheels and Brakes – Check both your wheels and your breaks before ever pulling out of a parking area. Check your brake fluids while also being aware for any noises coming from your brakes that could suggest an issue. The brake adjustment and slack adjusters should be inspected as well. Wheels should be checked for tire pressure and any missing lug nuts. Any obvious damage should be handled immediately.
- Exhaust and Fuel- Check the level of your fuel while also determine if any leaks are taking place. You should also determine if your exhaust system is in proper working order.
- Steering- You should first determine if you have enough steering wheel fluid. You should then check the alignment in your steering and determine how much space and steering the vehicle needs when making turns.
- Suspension-Check the axels, bolts, and springs of your vehicle’s suspension to ensure a component is not damaged or missing.
