The Importance of Keeping Your Air Filter in Great Condition
Oil changes are par for the course. And it’s normal to get engine checks now and then–but what about your air filter? Air filters are an important part of your truck that keep it running smoothly, and without it, you’re putting your truck at serious risk. And while you shouldn’t be fooled by a filter that only looks dirty but is running fine, it’s still a good idea to practice proper care for your air filter and its replacements. To find out how to keep everything in top shape, read on.
Store Replacements Well
Your replacement filters, which should always be on hand in case something goes wrong, should be stored within a dry and safe location. Filters are also very fragile, and can’t handle hard impacts. To protect it, make sure you aren’t able to drop it off a high ledge or onto something hard. Do your best, always, not to touch the filter itself. While it’s not disastrous, there’s always a chance you could damage it.
Listen to Your Manufacturer
Is your filter too dirty? Still clean? Functional? It all depends on what your manufacturer says. Truly, the quality of an air filter depends on the surrounding environment. Particularly dusty or sandy areas of the country are going to degrade your filter much faster. Busy highways are also a factor in air filter wear and tear. Always check your truck’s manual to make sure, but asking a professional on whether or not your air filter needs replacing is the best option.
Check Surrounding Areas
When you do replace your air filter, make sure that you’re checking all surrounding pipes and valves for damage or debris. An overused filter will have fallout that may cause damage to your truck. To keep this from happening, frequently check the filter and its cartridge, and be sure to do a quick vacuum of the area.
