Maryland Expands its Use of Virtual Weigh Stations (VWS) :: Trucking News

The state of Maryland began using virtual weigh stations (VWS) in 2009 in Howard County. These VWS checkpoints consist of sensors in the road to determine a truck’s weight, working in conjunction with an overhead camera used to identify the carrier. The VWS computes the truck’s weight and determines whether a safety inspection is needed, based on the compliance record of the truck carrier.

Expanding the use of Virtual Weight Stations in Maryland

Over the past several years, the State Highway Administration has expanded its uses of VWS, installing virtual scales on Route 50/301 approaching the Bay Bridge, Route 301 North about 2 miles south of Route 227, along MD 213 near Delaware, and on I-95 at Caton Avenue in Baltimore, with a future site planned at I-83 North near Pennsylvania. And there appears to be no end in sight for the expansion of the VWS program.
