Getting a Good Night’s Sleep on the Road
As a long haul trucker, you’re going to be spending quite a few nights on the road. Sleeper cabs are very useful for when drivers need a place to crash, but they weren’t all created equal. Especially if you are new to the trucking lifestyle, you may find it a bit challenging to get some shut-eye while you’re on the road. Fortunately, there are some little things that you can do to make sleep come a little easier!
Minimize Your Caffeine and Sugar Intake
Staying awake while you’re driving for hours on end is an acquired skill. To help yourself stay alert, you may find yourself reaching for caffeinated and sugary beverages and foods. Not only are these things bad for your health, they are bad for your sleep schedule as well. That’s not to say you shouldn’t have those things at all, but you should be mindful of how much you’re having and when. Caffeine and/or sugar too close to bedtime can mean lots of difficulties getting some shut-eye!
Move Around Whenever Possible
In order for your body to get a good, restful sleep, it needs to be tired. When you’ve just gotten done driving for six hours straight, your brain may feel exhausted, but your body probably hasn’t really done a whole lot in that time. Try and get some exercise. Even if you just take a quick walk around the truck stop, you’re still moving. Exercising improves your overall health as well as your ability to sleep.
Make Your Bed
Another thing you can try is to make yourself a cozy space. Your truck’s sleeping area is probably pretty small anyway, but it doesn’t have to be cramped. Try making yourself a sort of nest with pillows and blankets. If you’re sleeping during the day and driving at night, use something to block out as much light as you can. If you prefer quiet when you sleep, you might even consider some earplugs to keep out the noise.
