Good Health Habits for Long Haul Truckers to Follow
For long haul truckers, staying healthy while on a trip can be difficult. It’s easy for any number of bad habits to set in, considering how little you physically move your body despite going across the country for weeks on end. What good health habits can you follow in order to ensure you enjoy a long and happy career?
Eating Well
Even though it can be a steep challenge, eating well is quite important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a long-haul trucker. The better you feel, the better you’ll drive. Don’t be afraid to stop in at a supermarket or even a convenience store to grab the food supplies you need. Here are some items you can put on your shopping list when you’re constantly on the go:
- Leafy greens such as spinach and lettuce
- Sliced fruits and vegetables
- Whole pieces of fruit
- Easy to cook meat, such as chicken and turkey
If you’re looking to cook the meat on a grill, be sure to keep a portable grill in your truck. Luckily, they are inexpensive, easy to store, and easy to clean: perfect for all long-haul truckers to keep around.
Getting Your Exercise
Exercise is even more important when you’re off your feet most of the time. Long haul truckers might drive for twelve hours or more before being able to take a break and rest. While resting is important, you should also use some of your free time to get your exercise in. The more exercise you get, the healthier you will feel. Exercising can also help increase your stamina for those seemingly never-ending long-haul trips. Here are some options:
- The right shoes: If you keep a good pair of running shoes in your truck, you can find places to get out and do more than just stretch your legs. Walking, jogging, or sprinting can all help you get in better shape, and a faster metabolism is sure to help you burn off all the unhealthy snacks and drinks you’re consuming just to keep going.
- A small set of weights: Don’t forget about your arms and hands! While it’s not a good idea to be distracted while actively driving, hang onto a small set of weights. Just be sure to keep your weights out of the way when you don’t need them. It could spell disaster if they get loose in your cabin and interfere with your control over your truck.
Getting Sufficient Rest
Make sure to pick a high quality mattress and a firm pillow. These will provide you with the most support for when you sleep. Make sure when you do get some sleep to stay as comfortable as possible. You don’t want to doze off while at the wheel!
