Meeting Your Basic Needs without Breaking the Bank
You’re out on the road to earn a paycheck. In order to keep as much of that paycheck as possible, you’ll need to do a bit of planning to make sure your needs are met. Buying things from truck stops and convenience stores can get expensive quickly, so bringing as much as you can from home is usually going to be your best bet.
Water
First and foremost, you need to make sure you’re drinking enough water. Since your body is more than 70% water, you may start to feel pretty bad without it. Water is one of the most basic of all human needs.
Purchasing bottled water is expensive, and all of that plastic is bad for the environment. Getting ice water from a restaurant is free, but the quality is often dubious at best and it’s usually a small amount.
You can easily just bring jugs of water from home. If you don’t have space, or you run out, you can purchase a reusable water bottle with a built-in filter. That way you always know you’re drinking clean water! Just don’t forget to make sure you’re changing the filter at the recommended intervals.
Food
Eating healthy on the road isn’t super easy, especially when you’re trying to stick to a budget. Pack as many of your meals as you can into a cooler with plenty of ice packs. Many things can be frozen, too, and you can just heat it up in a truck stop microwave when you’re ready to eat. If you find yourself hungry and without a packed meal, some larger gas station chains have made-to-order salads and sandwiches that are pretty good in a pinch.
Clothing
As a trucker, you’re going to be driving for many hours on end. You won’t be in any fashion competitions, but you should make sure you look put together whenever you’re meeting clients. Ultimately, comfort is the name of the game. Secondhand and consignment shops are a low-cost way to get some wardrobe staples, and the selection of nicer items may surprise you!
