Reasons for Poor Fuel Efficiency

Reasons for Poor Fuel Efficiency

Read on to learn why you may be experiencing poor fuel efficiency from your commercial vehicle.

If you operate a commercial vehicle, then you likely understand the importance of fuel efficiency. It’s in your best interest to save money on gas whenever possible, but there are obstacles that can sometimes stop your vehicle from performing at the optimal level. Read on to learn why you may be experiencing poor fuel efficiency from your commercial vehicle.

You Have a Dirty Air Filter

The purpose of your air filter is to make sure clean air is getting filtered into your engine, which then combines with fuel. Without a clean air filter, you won’t get enough clean air inside your engine.

Clogged Fuel Filter

Fuel filters have an important role, which is to keep contaminants from getting into the engine. Otherwise, many parts inside the engine could get damaged by these contaminants. Unfortunately, these fuel filters can get clogged, resulting in you having less fuel pressure. This makes your engine less efficient than before. Getting fuel filters changed every other year is advised. This is especially true for older vehicles.

Your Tires Aren’t Fully Inflated

All of your tires need to be at the proper PSI level before you get on the road. You can’t have even a single tire underinflated. Without properly inflated tires, you put yourself and your commercial vehicle in great danger. On top of that, underinflated tires harm your fuel efficiency. To make sure you’re putting the right amount of air into your tires, consult your owner’s manual, and it will let you know how much air is needed.

Your Exhaust System is Having Problems

As air and fuel burn inside of your vehicle, dangerous fumes start being formed. It’s the job of your exhaust system to take those fumes and displace them from the vehicle for your safety. If your exhaust system is having difficulty getting these harmful fumes away from your vehicle, it not only impacts fuel efficiency, but it also puts you in danger, which is why the problem has to be fixed as soon as possible.

Fuel System Issues

Sometimes, damage to components of your fuel system could lead to lower fuel efficiency. It could be problems with any number of pieces, including your fuel pump or fuel injector, among other pieces.

Damaged or Clogged Fuel Injectors

In many cases, your vehicle doesn’t perform as well because the fuel injectors have gotten a little dirty or clogged. The role of the fuel injectors is to spray fuel into all of your engine cylinders. This process takes great precision so that the fuel can effectively blend together with the air.

Clogged injectors could mean they don’t spray fuel as well as they did before. You’ll have to get them either cleaned or replaced depending on the condition of your injectors.
