On the Road: Choosing the Soundtrack for Your Haul
Whether you choose long-haul or short-haul trucking, if you’re driving for a living you’re going to be spending a whole lot of time on the road. You probably don’t want to spend all those hours just listening to the sounds of your truck’s engine mingle with the sounds of the other vehicles on the road. What do you like to listen to while you’re out on the road?
Fiction
Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or something that’s just a good story can be a great travelling companion. A well-written audiobook can transport you pretty much anywhere, while you remain firmly planted in the driver’s seat of your truck. While not every book ever written is available in audio form, there is an astounding variety available. Moreover, audiobooks on CD are easily available at your local library. There are also smartphone apps that work with local libraries, and subscription services that allow you to listen to some things that may not be available through the library.
Non-Fiction
Just because a story isn’t made up in some way doesn’t mean it’s not interesting or entertaining. A non-fiction audiobook can add just as much to your haul as a fiction story can. With a non-fiction book, you can turn your freight hauling into a learning experience! Over the course of a 20 to 30 year career on the road, there’s a whole lot you can learn!
Music
If you don’t feel like listening to talking, put on some music! Through your smartphone, you can look up hundreds of thousands of songs from every genre imaginable. Before you leave, pull up your favorite music app and create yourself some playlists: a lively one for staying awake, a more subdued one for getting ready to sleep, a fun one to make sitting in traffic more bearable, and anything else you can think of!
