Tips for Earning More Miles
As a trucker, you’re paid by the mile, not by the hour. Many drivers see this as an advantage since you’re earning based on the amount of work you do rather than the amount of time you put into it. Trucking companies are always on the lookout for drivers who will get their cargo from point A to point B as safely and efficiently as possible. Build yourself a reputation as a reliable, efficient, and safe driver and it will separate you from the pack.
Safety First!
First and foremost, you need to be incredibly diligent when it comes to safety. Some of the most important safety tasks are the most obvious:
- Always wear your seat belt
- Follow at a safe distance
- Plan your routes
- Make sure you’re well-rested
- Try to keep emotions in check. Road rage isn’t going to help anyone!
…and so many more!
Be on Time Every Single Time
Dispatchers, suppliers, and customers all have one thing in common: they do not want to be kept waiting. If you’re someone who tends to be late often, try setting your clock about 15 to 20 minutes fast. If there is bad weather along your route, make sure you plan for it. If you have cargo that needs to be delivered in the middle of a big city at rush hour, leave as early as possible. Do whatever you can to be on time for every appointment. This will build your reputation as a dependable driver.
Don’t Let Yourself Get Lost in the Shuffle
Dispatchers are very busy people who often keep some odd hours. If you look at your logs and find that your week is a bit short on miles, simply bring it to your dispatcher’s attention. There’s no reason to feel offended by it. Sometimes the dispatcher just doesn’t notice. As long as you’re professional about it and you do your job well, you will be completely fine!
