Custom and Performance Applications

Custom driveshafts are made to maximize your heavy-duty vehicle’s performance, efficiency, and durability based on its unique needs or intended usage. The experts at Middleton & Meads consider the material and construction of the tubing, performance, components, and design modification when assembling the driveline.

Tubing

This hollow cylindrical section in a driveshaft transfers rotational power from the transmission to the wheels or other drivetrain components. It must withstand significant forces while maintaining its structural integrity over time. The material choice and manufacturing quality impact the driveshaft’s performance and durability.

U Joints

In some cases, the u-joint connects the drive shaft to the transmission or allows two drive shafts to connect to each other. The u-joint has a bearing at each end, allowing the drive shaft to move side to side or laterally without any driveline components breaking.

Slip Yokes

The purpose of slip yokes is to transfer power from the transfer case to the drive shaft. The splined shaft slides or slips in and out of the transfer case to allow this. Without the slip yoke, the U-joints could not rotate correctly with the drive shaft because it would enable the power take-off (PTOS) to flex.

Weld Yokes

Weld yokes are usually welded to the ends of the driveshaft tubing. They connect the driveshaft tubing to other components, such as u-joints, to ensure smooth transfer of rotational power while accommodating flexibility and movement.

Stub Yokes

Stub yokes usually have a shorter stub or shaft with external splines that connect with corresponding internal splines. Their primary role is enabling the driveshaft to change length slightly as the vehicle’s suspension moves, accommodating axle movement.

Transmission Slip Yokes

A worn or damaged transmission slip yoke may lead to clunking noises, vibrations, and possible drivetrain damage to your heavy-duty truck or bus. Hence, a driveline inspection is necessary to replace it. Transmission slip yokes ensure the U-joints can rotate smoothly by allowing the driveshaft to adjust to its length slightly to compensate for suspension movement.

4×4 CV Rebuild Kits

The CV rebuild kit contains components to repair or rebuild the constant velocity joint(s) in the driveshaft of a heavy-duty commercial four-wheel-drive vehicle. CV joints ensure smooth power delivery from the drivetrain to the wheels, mainly when the driveshaft functions at different angles because of suspension movement.

Signs of a Failing CV Joint

  • Vibration felt in the drivetrain, especially at higher speeds
  • Visible grease leaks around the CV boot area, indicating a damaged or torn boot
  • Popping or clicking noise during turns or when driving at full lock
  • Power transfer issues due to a damaged CV joint

Center Bearings

Center bearings are support bearings that secure and stabilize the driveshaft in heavy-duty vehicles. It’s especially crucial in longer driveshafts, where the shaft is susceptible to sagging or flexing. A stabilized driveshaft reduces unwanted vibrations caused by the driveshaft’s rotation.
